청각 장애자가 남우 조연상 받은 CODA

CODA 는 child of deaf adult.

주인공 Ruby는 청각장애인 부부의 딸. 오빠도 청각장애인이라 가족 중 그녀 혼자만 듣고 말할수 있고 가족끼리는 수화로 소통한다. 그런데 루비는 노래 하는 것을 좋아하고 달란트가 있다. 가족이 이해못할 달란트를 가진 것.

합창반 선생님은 그녀를 보스톤 버클리음대에 진학해보라 권유하지만 작은 배를 갖고  고기잡는 일로 생계를 유지하는 그녀의 가족은 그녀의 도움을 절대적으로 필요로 한다. 같이 일하고 같이 결속하며 단단히 결합되어 있던 그들 가족은 이일로 인해 갈등하게 되는데....

루비를 보며 이민자들의 자녀인 우리 아이들이 떠올랐다. 미국에서 말 못하고 못 알아듣다보니 청각 장애 언어 장애자나 매한가지. 자녀들이  참 많은 역할을 했다.

우리의 베이비, 루비를 낯선 보스톤으로 떠나보낼 수 없다고 말하는 엄마에게 아빠는 루비는 베이비였던 적이 없다고 말한다. 우리의 아이들도 그런 면이 있었지. 어리둥절 헤매는 부모 밑에서 혼자 알아서 해야하고 부모에개 도움이 되기도 했던.…

농담을 이해 못하고 다 웃는데 혼자 멀뚱거리다가 남을 따라 웃고 억울한 일이 있어도 말을 못해 따지지 못하고.…..우리도 그런 부모였지.

이 영화의 감독은 여성인데 이민자 가정의 아이있고 비슷한 경험이 있었다고 한다.

루비는 자신이 없으면 생계를 위협받는 가족의 상황으로 대학 진학을 포기하고  꿈을 접고 집에 남아 가족을 돕기로 하는데 ……

그러나 학교 콘서트에서 루비가 빛나게 노래하고 그걸 보는 사람들이 함께 리듬을 맞추고 감정을 실어내는 것을 본 아빠는 루비의 꿈을 이해하고 응원하며 루비가 자신의 길을 가도록 격려한다. 그리하여 온 가족이 대입 오디션장에 같이 가게 되는데…

오디션 현장. 

루비가 노래하다가 가족들이 이층의 방청석애서 보고 있는 것을 보자 노래 가사를 수화를 이용하여 표현하는데 그 모습이 난 제일 감동이었다. 

이제 엄마 아빠가 이해 못할 새로운 세상으로 날아갈 아이가 자기의 세계였던 부모에게 노래 가사를 몸짓 손짓으로 표현하며 온몸으로 노래하며 사랑을 표현하는 모습.

우리 아이들 보는 거 같아서, 또 그수화로 표현되는 그 모습이 말로 표현하는 사랑 그 이상이어서 많이 감동이었다.

그 노래 가사, 난 이제 다른 세상으로 가고 변하겠지만 그래도 나는 여전히 당신들의 사랑하는 딸이예요 하는 듯하여 넘 좋았고.….

연기는 아빠역을 한 분이 짱. 그 분은 실제 청각장아인이라는데 너무 잘 한다. 수화로 그렇게 생생하게 감정을 전달할 수 있는지 몰랐다. 티비 화면을 켜면 때로 한 구석에서 수화를 전하는 사람이 조그맣게 보이곤 하는데 그런 수화만 보다가 이 아빠의 수화를 보니 완전 차원이 다르다. 톤이 올라가고 내려가고 슬프고 기쁜 것이 다 담기는 수화. 가족이 수화로 싸울때는 큰 소리가 막 시끄럽게 들리는 듯하다. 

아카데미 남우 조연상 받을만 하셨다.

오랜만에 본 마음 따뜻한 가족 영화이고 청각장애인들에 대해 좀더 알게 해준 영화..강추.

아빠가 루비의 목젓을 만지며 노래를 느꼈던 그 장면도 좋았다. 노래는 사랑이 주제였는데 루비 가족이 서로에게 그러했다.
